Yarn Washing Instructons
Yarn labels may also show washing instructions. Below is an infographic summary of the symbol meanings. It is important to pay attention to these instructions or you risk ruining your project. Wool is a common "sensitive" fiber. Wool has the proclivity to felt. The felting process can be utilized to create a thicker, stiffer fabric. As a result of felting the fabric, it will also shrink. Felting a fabric requires a few components: agitation, moisture, and heat. The washing in

Crochet Gauge and Tension
As described earlier, the yarn label has a (recommended) gauge. It shows how many stitches and rows are required to create a 4 inch by 4 inch square (10cm x 10cm square). These numbers are specific to the yarn and hook or knitting needle. For example, my created label below has a recommended hook/knitting needle/tool size of 6.5mm. With that hook size (and yarn) it is expected that 10 single crochet stitches and 12 rows will create a 4 inch by 4 inch square. On the other sid

Yarn Weights
Yarn weights are a very important part of any yarn-craft. At its basic definition, it is a standardized numerical system to indicate the thickness of the yarn. For example Lion Brand Yarn has both "Feels Like Alpaca" (a DK weight yarn made with mostly acrylic fiber) and "Wool-Ease" (a worsted weight yarn made with acrylic and wool fiber). These yarns come from the same company and brand but are vastly dif

Crochet Hook Sizing Systems
There are many systems for crochet hook sizing! I'm based in the US so I'll go over the ones here first! But... unfortunately they aren't universal. Even the US uses two different labeling systems. The first is simply called "US Sizing" and the second is "Metric Sizing". US sizing has both number and alphabetic labels. US sizing is seemingly arbitrary but is based on a more antiquated standardization system. Metric sizing is simply the diameter measurement of the hook. Becaus
