Crochet Gauge and Tension
As described earlier, the yarn label has a (recommended) gauge. It shows how many stitches and rows are required to create a 4 inch by 4 inch square (10cm x 10cm square). These numbers are specific to the yarn and hook or knitting needle. For example, my created label below has a recommended hook/knitting needle/tool size of 6.5mm. Yarn weights are a very important part of any yarn-craft. At its basic definition, it is a standardized numerical system to indicate the thickness of the yarn. Yarn Label Example and Descriptions
As a beginner, yarn labels can be difficult to decipher. Here is a handy guide! The yarn brand and logo are self-explanatory. "Yarn line" is what "model" is to a car (make and model). Most yarn companies have multiple "yarn lines". For example Lion Brand Yarn has both "Feels Like Alpaca" (a DK weight yarn made with mostly acrylic fiber) and "Wool-Ease" (a worsted weight yarn made with acrylic and wool fiber).
